- Overwatch 2 has been rebranded, and Blizzard has launched Season 1 with five new characters to reset the sequel.
- This strategy has led to a sharp increase in the player base, leaving many gamers waiting in queues to play the first-person shooter.
- Overwatch has also hit all-time high figures of over 100K concurrent players on Steam.
Blizzard recently announced major changes for Overwatch 2. In addition to adding as many as five new heroes, the game has gone through a major rebranding.
The first-person shooter has now returned to the title “Overwatch,” and this move seems to be working surprisingly well for the game. In fact, player interest in the IP appears to be at an all-time high, leading to queues being formed for the free-to-play title.
Why it matters: Overwatch became an immediate hit when it launched in 2016, but its sequel has not had the same luck. It seems Blizzard’s strategy to reset the series once again is now working to its advantage.

As shown above, players have reported being stuck in queues when attempting to log into Overwatch.
Granted, these queues are much smaller than the ones seen for a title like Battlefield 6, but they highlight that Blizzard’s first-person shooter is in a much better position today than it was a few days ago.
Over on Steam, the game also appears to be doing incredibly well. Following the new season’s arrival, Overwatch immediately hit an all-time high of over 100K concurrent players.
At the time of writing, this figure stands at 121,255 players and is still climbing. It’s worth noting that the first-person shooter is likely experiencing a similar resurgence across other platforms, like PlayStation, Xbox, and Battle.net.

What makes this resurgence so interesting is that it wasn’t long ago that the first-person shooter hit an all-time low player count on Steam.
The fresh start with Overwatch season 1 seems to be just what the game needed. If Blizzard capitalizes on the current interest, it could retain players for many months or years to come.
