Games Of Various Scopes And Genres Were Cancelled Over The Years!

Story Highlight
  • A new compilation shows that Ubisoft cancelled at least 25 games in the last 8 years.
  • The list includes multiple Assassin’s Creed titles, live-service attempts, and more.
  • Multiple unannounced games and new IPs were also canned midway through development.

Ubisoft went through a devastating restructuring in early 2026 to streamline its teams into various creative houses. Each of these houses is responsible for certain popular franchises that are expected to make the most money and appeal to fans.

The publisher was previously involved with a lot more franchises, developing many games in different genres across its studios worldwide. Unfortunately, dozens of them have been either shelved, rebooted, or cancelled entirely over the years.

Why it matters: Ubisoft has cancelled many games mid-development for one reason or another, after spending a lot of budget on them. Many of the publisher’s live-service attempts also never materialized.

Ubisoft Live Service Games
Ubisoft is now focused on open-world and live-service initiatives.

According to redditor KekanKok, the following 25 major games have been cancelled since 2018, per official reports, credible rumors by insiders, and industry leaks:

  • 2026
  •  2025
    • Star Wars Outlaws 2
    • Project Maverick (original version): A Far Cry extraction-based spin-off, it was initially meant to be a multiplayer mode of Far Cry 7. Development was rebooted in early 2025, and Ubisoft is still figuring it out.
  • 2024
  • 2023
    • Project Oxygen (Immortals Fenyx Rising 2)
    • Project Q: A stylized 3rd-person PVPVE game made using Unreal Engine 5.
    • Project Renaissance: A Minecraft-type voxel game where you could create different worlds. Turned into Project Alterra, an Animal Crossing-inspired social sim game.
  • 2022
  • 2021
    • The Story of Rayman/Rayman Forever: A remake of the original Rayman
    • Project Reaper (original version of The Division: Heartland): A battle royale that was cancelled after poor player feedback.
  • 2019
    • Project Pioneer: A sci-fi project with non-violent exploration. It was apparently rebooted into a co-op multiplayer alien shooter.
    • Project Avalon: A medieval fantasy RPG, which was loosely based on King Arthur.
    • Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame sequel
  • 2018
    • Project Falcon (original version of XDefiant): It was a monster-hunting game that got reworked into the now-shelved XDefiant
    • Project Ion: Another sci-fi title, but not much is known about it
Ubisoft franchises
The company is now only focused on some of its IPs.

Surprisingly, the nearly two-decade old Beyond Good and Evil 2 and the next Ghost Recon game have survived Ubisoft’s recent purges and remain in development.

Do you think some of these cancelled Ubisoft games would have been a success, or was it the wise decision to shelve all the projects indefinitely? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
