- GOG’s new boss, Michał Kiciński, doesn’t see Steam as an obstacle and thinks that the platform’s market share can be taken away.
- The Polish entrepreneur stated it’s hard to defend a monopoly like Steam’s.
- Kiciński applauded the Valve storefront, saying it’s very hard to beat, but GOG can improve in the market if it sticks to its strengths.
Steam has been on a remarkable run for the past year or so, with the digital platform generating record revenue for Valve in 2025 while also surpassing its all-time concurrent player peak multiple times in the last few months.
Many developers acknowledge the monopoly Steam has on the PC market. If you ask the new boss of GOG, however, the platform isn’t unbeatable, and its hefty market share can be taken away easily.
Why It Matters: Steam has been dominating PC gaming due to its consumer-friendly approach, and GOG can certainly give the giant some competition if it sticks to its strengths.

In an interview with Games Industry, new GOG head Michał Kiciński stated that he doesn’t see Steam as an obstacle, but rather the opposite. Kiciński admitted that most people would be intimidated by the storefront’s monopoly, but he thinks it’s easy to take away.
Somebody might say that having a competitor like Steam with 80% of the market share is a huge obstacle, but to me it’s the opposite.
The co-founder of CDPR explained that Steam’s 80% share is hard to defend in such a competitive industry, and that makes it easy for someone to infiltrate the market.
It’ll be difficult for them to defend the market, because they already have 80%, so it should be easier to take the market from them.
The Polish entrepreneur did admit that the reliability Steam provides is the reason it’s winning in the market. Hence, if GOG wants to compete with the Valve giant, it needs to improve in this regard while adding better content for users.

In addition, Kiciński applauded Steam, saying it’s a goliath and competing with it won’t be an easy task, as historically proven by Epic Games. However, if GOG focuses on its strengths and doubles down on them, the platform will improve in the industry.
