The Only Reason Call of Duty Exists Is Because of EA, Says Battlefield Lead

'Call of Duty Exists Because EA Were D***s'

Story Highlight
  • Battlefield lead, Vince Zampella, says Call of Duty only exists because EA was a d***.
  • Zampella left EA in 2002, which led to him founding Infinity Ward and Call of Duty.
  • After so many years, this is the year Battlefield has dominated Call of Duty.

Battlefield has annihilated Call of Duty this year. The franchise has seen a massive revival, with Battlefield 6 beta first outperforming Black Ops 7 beta, then the official release breaking past the Activision FPS’s all-time peak player count.

The current Battlefield lead says that the only reason the Call of Duty franchise exists is because EA was D***s. The context behind this is the time when he left EA back in 2002, after a dispute with the company.

Why it matters: The first Battlefield game first came out in 2002, a year before the first Call of Duty. So, if things had gone a bit differently and the lead hadn’t left EA, the franchise might not have existed.

Talking to GQ, Vince Zampella talked about how the Call of Duty franchise was made. He blamed the whole thing on EA because they were the reason he left the company and went on to create Infinity Ward.

Infinity Ward, of course, is the studio that made Call of Duty, a franchise that would dominate the genre for years to come. So, this shows how big an influence Zampella has had on the industry.

Zampella then later returned to EA and has since led massive titles like Titanfall, Star Wars, and now Battlefield 6. So, if the dispute had never happened and he hadn’t left the studio, Call of Duty might not even exist.

Nonetheless, competition is always great, and both franchises have helped push each other to be better. Even this year, Black Ops 7 has seen a lot of improvements thanks to Battlefield 6.
