- A new leak suggests that next-gen consoles will use AMD’s Zen 6 “Magnus” APU, featuring an unusual 11-core CPU layout.
- The chip features a 264 mm² graphics die with a 384-bit memory bus, paired with a 144 mm² SoC die on TSMC’s 3nm process.
- Another Insider says this design is for the next Xbox, due to its larger, costlier configuration.
We’re officially just a few years away from seeing the next console generation. The first major leak has apparently revealed the APU configuration for one of the consoles, which are set to come with AMD’s Zen 6 “Magnus” APU.
The APU will feature a non-conventional 11-core CPU configuration, with eight cores being Zen 6 C cores and the remaining three cores being Zen 6 cores.
Why it matters: With such heavy features, the next-gen consoles could potentially break the $500 traditional price point, yet remain quite powerful.
In the latest YouTube video published by Moore’s Law is Dead, the insider explained that the APU features an iGPU with a 264 mm² graphics die carrying a 384-bit memory bus, and connected to a 144 mm² SoC die.
The CPU die on the SoC is based on the TSMC 3nm process, featuring 12MB of L3 cache. Moreover, the APU will also feature 80 CUs.
The large square design of this APU would be the largest yet. As such, the APU was initially thought to be for laptops by the leaker. However, the APU was listed in the semicustom business unit, which is usually referred to for consoles.
All the signs, including the naming, unusual core count, and other references, likely indicate that it is PS6’s APU, as suggested by the leaker.
That is, Kepler_L2, another insider commented on the leak, saying that this APU is unlikely to be for PS6, as the gaming giant uses different codenames for its APUs. Moreover, the design also looks quite expensive for the PS6 and lead architect for the console, Mark Cerny usually doesn’t opt for this die area.
As such, it could likely be the next-gen Xbox’s APU, which is already said to be competing against pre-built PCs rather than the PlayStation, making them more costly and aligning with the price point for the APU.
