Memory Prices Are Only Getting Worse!

Story Highlight
  • DDR4, DDR5, GDDR6, and GDDR7 modules have become more expensive in 2025.
  • A report highlights that DDR4 pricing has risen by as much as 45% due to supply shortages.
  • The price hikes could affect smartphones, gaming consoles, graphics cards, and other related products.

DRAM prices have been on the rise over the last year, and this trend is unlikely to change anytime soon. Amid increasing demand for DDR5 memory, a new report outlines upcoming price hikes for all sectors that utilize this memory standard.

Similarly, the GDDR6 format used in graphics cards and other hardware has seen a price increase.

Why it matters: Memory is an integral component of every modern piece of technology. Therefore, price hikes will affect phones, computers, gaming consoles, and other products.

As reported by TrendForce, DDR4 modules have seen a price hike of up to 45% in Q3 2025. This is largely due to the limited supply of DDR4 memory, leading to hoarding of modules from various companies and system builders.

Elsewhere, the newer formats, including DDR5 and GDDR6, remain expensive to produce. The same is true of the newly introduced GDDR7, which is used in Nvidia’s latest RTX 5000 graphics cards.

The price increase varies between 3% and 45%, with DDR4 being the most heavily impacted in the consumer sector. This is concerning, as consumer mobile phones may also be heavily affected by this trend.

Adding to the bad news, major Korean and US suppliers have confirmed plans to reduce LPDDR4X supply, raising further concerns for the smartphone industry.

The only way forward might be widespread adoption of DDR5. Although this format has become commonplace in the latest devices, the current popularity of DDR4 will lead to a major impact on the tech industry.

It would not be surprising to see prices rise further, so it may be best to plan ahead for those looking to purchase new devices or memory in the future.
