Netflix debuted its gaming services back in 2021 as a move to increase engagement with the platform. While the debate of its success is still there, the Netflix Games boss says that console gaming isn’t the future going forward.
He says that the current model of console games isn’t right and that young audiences aren’t attracted to it, as they prefer more interactive experiences.
Why it matters: Netflix has been slowly pushing towards gaming for the last few years and even opened an AAA studio for console-level gaming, recruiting various veterans, only to shut it down last year.
Talking to The Game Business, the president of Netflix Games, Alain Tascan, stated that he doesn’t believe console gaming holds much of a future. He said that 8– or 10-year-old children don’t dream of getting a PS6 but prefer digital interaction.
(For) console, we started to look at the future where the platform is agnostic. Look at the younger generation. Are eight-year-olds and ten-year-olds dreaming of owning a PlayStation 6? I am not sure.

They are inclined more towards digital screen interaction, whether in a car or at home. With consoles, you need controllers and other high-definition elements, a major restriction in the console-games model.
Many fans won’t agree, as console gaming has many adult players. While interactive screens are good for children, they aren’t the way for a more mature audience; they prefer full-fledged experiences.
As for children, most will agree that console gaming is a bit too much. However, based on the kind of games that Netflix has released over the past few years, they are targeting mobile devices, especially a younger audience.
