Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet Takes Inspiration From Elden Ring For Player Freedom

Naughty Dog Potentially Delivering Similar Open World As Lands Between!

Story Highlight
  • Naughty Dog used Elden Ring as an example while developing player freedom in Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
  • A report revealed that the one-planet exploration in the title will resemble Elden Ring’s approach.
  • Naughty Dog has also praised FromSoftware’s game design in the past.

Unsurprisingly, Naughty Dog’s future projects are always a topic of interest among fans due to the studio’s success, and the upcoming Intergalactic: Heretic Prophet is not any different.

The studio announced this mystery project last year to a rather mixed reception, but sources close to the developer have insisted that the upcoming title has all the makings of a hit. Moreover, if what Ben Hanson says is true, it will be one of the most ambitious projects Naughty Dog has ever made.

Why it matters: Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet needs top-notch gameplay to win fan approval, and Elden Ring-level freedom is a good place to start.

According to Hanson, the host of the MinnMax podcast, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is heavily inspired by FromSoftware’s magnum opus. He previously stated that Naughty Dog was drawing inspiration from another title with a lot of player freedom, and now he can say with certainty it was Elden Ring.

I teased that Naughty Dog’s next game is inspired by a title with a lot of player freedom, and it’s fine to say now that game was Elden Ring.”

Ben Hanson explained he couldn’t reveal this tidbit before, but as more information has come out, he can see how this influence will persist in Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. You are stuck on one planet and will explore it with your main character, and with Elden Ring’s level of exploration, it will be exciting, to say the least.

If this is the case, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet will be a break for Naughty Dog, as the developer has historically made linear titles with varying levels of exploration. However, with the negative PR surrounding the title, Naughty Dog needs the gameplay mechanics to shine through, and freedom will be a big sell.

Intergalactic has been at the end of severe DEI backlash since its reveal

The studio is fighting an uphill battle with the game’s trailer passing Concord’s dislike record and DEI backlash already present. Still, if Naughty Dog delivers on this wild adventure that will correct past mistakes, there is no reason the game won’t succeed.
