Debuts With Unofficial Sonic Unleashed PC Port!

Story Highlight
  • A new tool, XenonRecomp, allows Xbox 360 games to run natively on PC by converting PowerPC assembly into X86 architecture.
  • Fans have used this to create an unofficial PC port for Sonic Unleashed, supporting 4K resolution and anti-aliasing enhancements.
  • This breakthrough could lead to more Xbox 360 exclusives like Asura’s Wrath and Midnight Club: Los Angeles becoming playable on PC.

While the exclusivity era is just now ending, a vast catalog of older games can’t be played on modern platforms, even with backward compatibility. Emulation was the go-to process for this, but it brought many problems.

Thankfully, native recompilation for Xbox 360 games is now available for the first time. This conversion of PowerPC assembly into supported X86 architecture allows the game to run natively on PC.

Why it matters: This tool will preserve older games and allow PC players to experience Xbox 360 console exclusives they couldn’t try otherwise.

Sonic Unleashed

The tool Xenonrecomp can be downloaded on GitHub. The secondary tool, XenosRecomp, helps with the graphic translation since the old Xbox 360’s graphic system is entirely different.

XenonRecomp was inspired by N64: Recompiled, a similar tool to translate Nintendo 64 games to PC executables.

Working in sync, fans have created an unofficial PC port for Sonic Unleashed, dubbed “Unleashed Recompile.” Sonic Unleashed also supports enhancements with 4k resolution, Anti-Aliasing support of more than 2X MSAA, and more.

Asura's Wrath
Asura’s Wrath Needs Its Own Anime.

Still, players would need their own copies to play the game. With such tools, fans can expect similar PC ports for other Xbox 360 exclusives, such as Midnight Club: Los Angeles, Asura’s Wrath, and more.
