- Crysis 4 has now been put on hold as Crytek lays off 15% of its staff.
- The developers are now being shifted to Hunt: Showdown 1896.
- Since going independent, Crytek’s financial situation has degraded and may also imply that Crysis 4 may be canceled completely.
Just a couple of decades ago, Crytek pushed the boundaries of visual fidelity in a video game with the Crysis trilogy. Since then, the developer has been busy with other projects with the Crysis franchise on a hiatus.
However, recently, the studio announced that they’re developing a new Crysis game, with progression going quite smoothly. Unfortunately, the latest update from the studio brings disappointing news as Crysis 4 gets put on hold for the time being.
Why it matters: Fans have been waiting for the next Crysis game for over a decade. The next title being delayed implies that they’ll have to wait a few more years before they get to witness the series’ return.
Moreover, Crytek announced a 15% layoff for its studio which accounts for around 400 members. The studio also said that the developers who were previously working on Crysis 4 have been transferred to Hunt: Showdown 1986.
Crytek clarified that the layoff aimed to cut costs for the ongoing studio procedures and that they cannot continue till they’re financially stable. Hunt: Showdown 1896 is relatively going well but doesn’t have a strong player base to fund a whole studio’s operations.
Crytek no longer has EA’s support, so it’s important to note that they’re currently fully independent. Moreover, previous financial reports reveal that their profits are quite low for a company this big. Just in 2021, their recorded profit was $10 million.
Unless Crytek partners with a major publisher, the studio’s future appears quite grim, and Crysis 4 may get stalled completely.
