- A new quarterly earnings report by Take-Two reveals that Xbox seemingly only sold two million units in 2024.
- By December 2023, Xbox was estimated to have rolled over 27 million consoles globally; the number only grew by 2 million by the next year’s end.
- PlayStation had sold 65.5 million units by September 2024, leaving only 29 million sales for Xbox out of the 94 million estimate from Take-Two.
It is no surprise that the famous console wars era is now officially over, with PlayStation coming out on top of this generation in many departments. However, no one would have expected such a huge divide to form between both giants in hardware sales over the years.
Now, a new report suggests that Xbox only managed to roll over approximately 2 million units last year, a stark contrast when compared to how well PlayStation 5 performed throughout 2024.
Why it matters: Xbox only selling two million units worldwide in the last 12 months is quite a concerning development, but it also explains why the brand is shifting towards a multiplatform and software-focused strategy.
The latest quarterly earnings report by Take-Two reveals that over 94 million current-gen consoles were sold worldwide as of November 2024. It is a notable difference from 2023’s 77 million, based on the figure provided by Take-Two last year.
Out of these 94 million, Xbox is said to have only sold about 29 million consoles. Analysis from last year’s report revealed that Xbox had sold about 27 million consoles, indicating a measly 2 million increase.
The official PlayStation 5 sales grew to 65.5 million by the end of September 2024, likely standing even higher toward the end of 2024. Sony likely sold 66 million or more consoles by November, but that would lead to even fewer Xbox Series S|X units in Take-Two’s 94 million figure.
Ultimately, with 65.5 million or more consoles of 94 million being sold by Sony, Microsoft sold no more than 28.5 million Xbox Series S|X units in total. Even when rounding off and accounting for any additional sales throughout 2024, this figure likely topped out at 29 million.
Based on these estimations, Xbox Series X|S sales went up by 2 million units in 2024. Another report earlier this year suggested that the company recorded its worst yearly console sales numbers ever in 2024.
Microsoft’s gaming brand has stopped officially announcing its console sales, but these estimations reveal that the Xbox Series X|S barely sold a few million units at the very best.
