Consoles Stagnated Since 2021 But PC Gaming Grew 20%

Story Highlight
  • PC gaming has seen consumer spending rise by $30 billion over the last 13 years.
  • The platform also took the lead over consoles last year, accounting for 53% of non-mobile revenue.
  • Console growth has stagnated, but the business still rakes in billions of dollars each year.

PC gaming has been on an upward trek over the past few years, showing notable growth in 2023. Owing to the accessibility of the platform, availability of exclusives from PlayStation and Xbox, and more, this platform continues to thrive.

On the other hand, console gaming has stagnated, and while PlayStation does not see PC gaming as a threat, an analysis points to the latter doing better than consoles last year.

Why it matters: Because the lines between different hardware have been blurred recently, and the era of exclusivity is all but over, the former platform has lost its biggest edge over the competition.

PC Gaming vs Consoles
Comparison Between PC And Console Markets via Epyllion

As reported by investment strategy firm Epyllion, console growth has stagnated since 2021. The date shared by Epyllion relies on popular analysis firms like Circana and Newzoo, presenting a combined outlook of the industry.

Looking at the charts, it’s clear that PC gaming has the most potential heading into 2025. As per Epyllion, this market has grown 20% in terms of revenue generated since 2021 compared to consoles.

This is best illustrated in the graphic above, which shows 53% of the non-mobile gaming revenue share for PCs over 47% for consoles. The firm attributes this lead to advantages like a bigger library, multi-tasking capabilities, and a cheaper entry point.

Elsewhere, the firm reported increased PC spending of $30 billion between 2011 and 2024.

PC Gaming Is A Lot More Flexible Than The Competition

Both PC and consoles will likely continue trading blows in the short term, even if the market trends highlight the former as a more popular choice in the long term. As such, it will certainly be interesting to see how the market evolves.

With new consoles like the Nintendo Switch 2 and the rumored next-gen Xbox potentially arriving within the next two years, the console space could go through notable changes soon.
