More Studios Giving Up On DEI!

Story Highlight
  • Lords of the Fallen Studio won’t integrate DEI into its games from now on.
  • The studio says it’s bad for commercial success and takes away from players’ enjoyment.
  • Multiple games that supported political and social agendas have failed in recent years.

DEI in gaming has been on a decline ever since it started getting attention for all the wrong reasons. It has been accused of destroying creativity and forcing agendas. CI Games, the creators of Lords of the Fallen have stated they won’t integrate DEI into their games.

Lords of the Fallen was amongst the finest releases of 2023. The studio revealed it is already working on the sequel and just as the original, it won’t have any controversial elements to it.

Why it matters: Since the fall of games like Concord, the industry has taken a different turn with many studios looking to shy away from DEI, which was slowly becoming an essential part of most games.

Lords of The Fallen studios won’t add DEI into games.

During an Investor’s Call meeting, CI Games developer, Ryan Hill was asked about his stance on DEI. He talked about how some games have tried to embed social and political agendas, and players don’t appreciate it at all.

We will not be integrating any social or political agencies into these experiences going forward having observed the high risk this can present.

inclusivity in games
We’ve seen games fail badly last year due to agendas.

Hill further stated that their games are developed in a way that maximizes player enjoyment, so things like agendas don’t have any place in them. It is also bad for commercial success as we’ve seen with some high profile releases in the last year.

This is clear from the recent reception of Naughty Dog’s latest IP Intergalactic and Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows. On the other hand, Helldivers 2 studio claimed that unnecessary DEI detracts from the game experience.
