- The developer has talked about how they already knew that the switch to Ciri as the protagonist could be controversial.
- However, he further states that the game’s goal is to prove that Ciri is a great choice as the next main character.
Just recently, during the Game Awards, CD Projekt Red finally released the first trailer of Witcher 4, which was well received by fans.
While Ciri was an obvious choice for many as a protagonist in Witcher 4, some fans are still upset about the decision. Talking about it, CD Projekt Red developers said they knew the Ciri switch could be controversial as fans loved playing as Geralt.
Why it matters: Geralt has been the main character in the last three games of the franchise. Therefore, many fans aren’t ready to switch to any other protagonist.
During a recent interview with VGC, narrative director Phillip Weber talked about how the team already knew that this decision could be controversial to many for obvious reasons.
I think we definitely knew it could be controversial for some people because of course, in the previous three Witcher games Geralt was the protagonist.

Phillip further stated that even he loved playing as Geralt, which is why he knew some fans would be upset about this decision. However, he also states it is a legitimate concern if fans still want to play as Geralt.
Further talking about Ciri, Weber stated that the goal is to prove with Ciri as the main character, players can do so many interesting things that would make her worth it as the protagonist.
Some believe that Witcher 4 faces criticism because of Ciri as the protagonist. However, Ciri has a strong backstory and enough strength to be a fitting lead for the next game in the series.
Nonetheless, not much information about the game has been announced yet. Recently, it was reported that the Witcher 4 map size would be more or less the same as that of Witcher 3.
Other reports have also suggested that the game may be skipping Xbox Series S due to hardware limitations.
