Black Myth: Wukong Ending Leaves Room For The Perfect Sequel

Expert Verified By

With the Destined One free from the shackles of his cursed fate, the story of Black Myth: Wukong is far from over. Game Science's story is just getting started, and I can't wait to see where it goes from here.

Story Highlight
  • Black Myth: Wukong excels in the story-telling department.
  • The true ending shows that the Destined One finally breaks free from the curse Wukong was trapped in.
  • Due to this, he can now challenge the celestials, which leaves a lot of room for a sequel or DLC.

Everybody must be aware of Black Myth: Wukong by now. It is now the biggest single-player release on Steam and still averages over 1.3 million players daily. Like everyone else, I’ve had a great time going through Game Science’s take on Journey to the West.

The game features a great story, but the true ending really doesn’t offer much closure. There are several endings with other bosses; however, the true ending leaves a lot of room for a sequel. Given the game’s success, I believe a sequel is inevitable.

Why it matters: After the first success from Game Science, a new entry in the series is guaranteed to be a standout hit.

Black Myth: Wukong Has A Great Story

The Story Is Not Weak At All

Many said before release that this action RPG wouldn’t have a good story, but I don’t think that is the case. I have seen many biased opinions on this matter, making me wonder if people understood the story.

To understand the story, you must first know about the Golden Fillet. This is the headband that appeared on Wukong’s head when he was fighting Erlang. This is actually a reference from the novel Journey to the West.

The Monkey King was tricked into wearing this headband. He was known for being a mischievous monkey who always did whatever he wanted. He never listened to anyone, so they had to resort to such means to keep him in control. In the prologue, when Wukong is in his bird form, you can see the headband appearing on him.

That is when the monk recites a chant, which causes immense pain to the wearer of Golden Fillet, leading to the loss against Erlang. So, the main character is not the same person, but he is the one who is destined to bear the burden of the Monkey King.

The Story Revolves Around The Golden Fillet

Sun Wukong Was Defeated Due To The Effect of Golden Fillet

The whole story revolves around just one item, and that’s pretty fascinating. Right at the very end, this item appears again. When Sun Wukong was killed, five of his senses were taken away by Yaoguai Kings. However, his mind, the last sense was completely lost.

In chapter 6, the old monkey reveals that we, the main character, serve as the mind and can bear the name of Wukong. However, for that, there was one last ordeal and that was fighting Wukong himself. You first fight the Stone Monkey.

Later on, the boss evolves, and finally, you fight The Great Sage’s Broken Shell, and oh boy, is that the best fight in the game. This is arguably one of the best bosses I have ever faced since his taunts are on another level. However, upon defeating the broken shell, the Golden Fillet appears again.

The old monkey reappears and places the fillet on the head of the Destined One. However, wasn’t this the object that was the main reason why Wukong died? So, why did they show the fillet as a peaceful gesture? This feels like history is repeating itself.

There is so much confusion about the old monkey that it is very likely that he has joined forces with heaven. Wukong, with all the relics, is a trouble that heaven can’t really handle, so the old monkey seems to be guarding the stone.

Now that all of the relics are sealed in the stone, no one will have to worry about collecting them or reviving the Monkey King.

A Sequel or DLC Seems Imminent

The default ending doesn’t do justice to the character. However, there is another ending you can trigger. For that, you would have to beat Erlang, a secret boss. After doing so, fight the last boss, and the Destined One won’t let the old monkey place the Golden Fillet on his head.

Instead, just as the old monkey is about to place it, the Destined One opens his eyes and surprises us with a new animation. This leads to a transition into the journey of Wukong, and at last, we can see the events before the prologue.

After the animation ends, the Destined One seems free from this fate. I don’t know why, but this all seems like a plan curated by none other than the Monkey King.

So, now that the Destined One is free of the fillet, he can destroy the celestials, which leaves a lot of room for a sequel. The developer can even release DLC, but exploring heaven will require a lot of content.
