Mortal Kombat has stayed relevant as one of the biggest fighting game IPs across the globe for several decades, but the series has evolved in many ways. For starters, Warner Bros. rarely experiments with spin-offs for the franchise today.
This means incredible games like Shaolin Monks no longer show up, but this may change soon. A new report suggests NetherRealm is exploring a spin-off, with this spin-off likely to be Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks 2.
Why it matters: Shaolin Monks was an excellent spin-off that added a new twist to Mortal Kombat’s fighting game formula. It also focused on co-op gameplay, making the experience enjoyable for multiple people.
The report comes from V Scooper, a user known to share various leaks regarding the film and television industry. His latest scoop suggests that NetherRealm is exploring an action-adventure mode or spin-off for one of its IPs.
The leaker also suggests that this spin-off will likely be made for Mortal Kombat, which can only mean one thing since Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon has previously shown intentions to revisit Shaolin Monks.
Going by the leaks and Ed Boon’s fondness for this spin-off, there is only one possible answer. It seems the team is looking to create Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks 2, but the leaker asserts that it’s too early to say anything for certain.
He also states that there is a possibility that this spin-off could be based on Injustice. However, considering this franchise hasn’t been relevant in many years, this seems unlikely, even if NetherRealm intends to revisit Injustice eventually.
While Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks 2 certainly sounds exciting, NetherRealm will likely require several years for this project. Till then, Mortal Kombat 1 has a lot to offer, though we advise staying away from the Nintendo Switch version.
Mortal Kombat 1 has already received all of its initial DLC characters. However, Ed Boon has promised even more content, including a story expansion to keep fans busy. Therefore, the game should have plenty of content to keep everyone hooked till the next release.
