- AMD confirms the Ryzen 9000 series will not be faster than last-gen 3D V-Cache counterparts.
- The Ryzen 7 7800x3D seems to be the best choice for purely gaming-based PC builds.
- PC gamers must wait for Ryzen 9000x3D CPUs to see a bigger gap in performance.
During Computex 2024, AMD’s Senior Technical Marketing Manager of CPUs, Donny Woligroski, said that the latest AMD Ryzen 9000 series will not be able to beat Ryzen 7000x3D in gaming.
As they specialise in gaming, the 7000x3D processors will remain the best bet for gaming performance. However, fans should expect the future Ryzen 9000x3D lineup to take this crown eventually.
Why it matters: The Ryzen 7000 CPUs marked a significant performance breakthrough. They easily beat last-gen 3D V-Cache counterparts.
The Ryzen 9000x3D series will come with a hefty price tag once it arrives later this year. Instead of considering buying the most recent model, this might persuade customers to upgrade to the Ryzen 7000x3D lineup instead.
According to comparisons, an Intel Core i9-14900K can be up to 23% slower in games when using an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X. This disparity grows at the content production productivity level, reaching 56%.
Overall, the new CPUs are more of an all-around choice than the Intel processor, excelling at both productivity and gaming. However, the AMD executive dubbed 7000x3D as the king of the hill.
Compared to the Ryzen 9000 series, the current top-of-the-line CPUs are still faster, even if by a small margin. While last-generation CPUs marked a major step up over their predecessors, AMD does not appear to be repeating this trend.
As we’ve already seen, there are significant gains in energy efficiency, which explains why the Zen 5 cores don’t provide a significant speed boost (AMD claims +16% in IPC).
In other words, the performance gain has been scaled back to prevent the several overheating issues that arose when many CPUs from the previous generation were first introduced. Therefore, the real gains for gaming enthusiasts will arrive with the next-gen 3D V-Cache CPUs.
