- A leaker suggests that Call of Duty 2026 and 2026 will be based on Ghosts and Advanced Warfare, respectively.
- These franchises could lead to fresh new gameplay for the series.
- Infinity Ward already treated a Ghosts sequel in 2013, but these projects could be fresh reboots.
Call of Duty has two decades of history behind it. The franchise has spawned various sub-IPs in these decades, including the Modern Warfare and Black Ops series.
While these are the two biggest Call of Duty IPs, others like Ghosts, Advanced Warfare, and Infinite Warfare are also popular. It seems Activision is gearing up to revisit the lesser-known IPs, with a leak pointing to a return to Ghosts and Advanced Warfare.
Why it matters: Both Call of Duty Ghosts and Advanced Warfare were major departures from past entries, making them distinct compared to the rest of this IP’s offerings.
Popular leaker zvis_ceral, who previously leaked details on Splinter Cell Remake, has now shared information about the future Call of Duty titles.
As per his report, Call of Duty 2026 is being developed at Infinity Ward as part of the Devilwood project. He believes the title will be part of the Call of Duty Ghosts sub-franchise.
The leaker states Call of Duty 2027 is being developed by Sledgehammer Games and will be known as Project Anvil. He suggests that this entry will mark a return to futuristic gameplay, with the studio reviving Advanced Warfare.
It remains to be seen if these entries will serve as direct sequels or fresh reboots. Infinity Ward already set up a sequel to Call of Duty Ghosts in 2013, but this story was abandoned after being considered underwhelming.
Recent leaks have also suggested that the Call of Duty franchise may finally return to the Xbox stage after a decade. This year’s entry is set to focus on the Black Ops series, with a Gulf War setting.
Moreover, Activision plans to release a direct sequel to Black Ops 2 next year.
Between all these sub-franchises, Call of Duty seems to be leaning heavily into the nostalgia factor. Last year’s Modern Warfare 3 was already a re-release in terms of the multiplayer content, so it will be interesting to see where this IP goes next.
Both Ghosts and Advanced Warfare still have an avid fanbase despite the many controversial elements of these releases. A step away from Modern Warfare and Black Ops should also be a breath of fresh air for this series.
