Activision Rejected Tony Hawk’s 3+4 Remakes To Prioritize Call of Duty

Tony Hawk's Devs Wanted More Remakes!

Story Highlight
  • Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater returned in 2020 with a remake of the first two games.
  • While it was a commercial success, Activision rejected the pitch for more remakes.
  • It has now been claimed that Activision wanted the developers to help with Call of Duty instead of creating more remakes.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater is one of the oldest sports franchises ever to grace the gaming industry. With a legacy dating back over two decades, this series has had multiple successful releases.

Several years after Activision moved on from the IP, its attempt at a remake with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 was considered a successful revival. However, it seems the studio’s focus on Call of Duty has killed this franchise once again.

Why it matters: Vicarious Visions was leading the remakes, but this developer has been added to the list of teams supporting Activision’s other IPs.

In a new Gaming History video, Liam Robertson discussed Activision’s IPs, including Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. He explained that more remakes were already planned before the launch of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2.

While the developers were trying to include the third and fourth games in the original remake, they eventually changed plans due to a lack of time. Vicarious Visions remained hopeful that another remake collection would follow, but Activision had other plans.

According to Liam Robertson’s anonymous source from Vicarious Visions, the team was prepared to move on to the next project.

The idea that we’d continue on and release 3+4 in some fashion was on the table.

Following the commercial success of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2, a pitch for the 3 + 4 remake was presented to Activision. However, this was declined as the publisher wanted Vicarious Visions to help with its more prominent franchises.

This studio has assisted in the development of the Diablo 2 Remake in the past and has also been helping on Activision’s biggest franchise, Call of Duty. This is why we haven’t seen a new entry in the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater franchise.

Activision then seemed to consider working with other developers for Tony Hawk’s, but the publisher was unwilling to trust anyone but Vicarious Visions. This spelled another untimely demise for this skateboarding series.

While there may be little hope left from Activision, EA is working on a modern rendition of Skate.

This release will incorporate modern elements like realistic physics for another thrilling skateboarding experience. However, evidence of loot boxes has been spotted in earlier builds, leading to some doubts about this revival.
