60FPS Mode Looks Very Soft & Lacks Sharpness!

Story Highlight
  • Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has been officially released.
  • An analysis of the game shows poor visuals in the performance mode, with a soft look overall.
  • The analysis concludes that it looks worse than Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s performance mode.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the most anticipated JRPG this year, is officially out and has been receiving praise across the board. The title has received a positive reception, becoming the second-best-rated entry in the series after the team aimed for scores above 90/100.

However, this JRPG is not without its faults. The visuals, in particular, are a mixed bag. Square Enix has not done a great job with the performance mode, and an analysis states that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth looks worse than its predecessor when running at 60FPS.

Why it matters: This JRPG is among the few current-gen-only exclusives on the PS5 in 2024, making the lack of a competent performance mode disappointing for such an important release.

Digital Foundry has done an in-depth analysis of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, noting that it runs at 1152p in performance mode, while quality mode lands closer to 4K. The former also upscale to 4K, but it does not use the typical upscaling method.

This leads to mixed results, with the title appearing less sharp than it should be in the final image. The main culprit appears to be the soft final output and Square Enix’s post-processing implementation.

Many viewers have also noticed this disappointing quality, claiming to have played 1080p games that appeared sharper.

Rebirth is a lot less sharp than remake when targeting 60FPS.

It should be noted that Final Fantasy 7 Remake ran at a higher resolution in performance mode, landing at around 1512p. However, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth can also fall short in other areas.

While visuals are generally better, texture quality can vary wildly from area to area, giving the game an inconsistent look in many ways. Lighting is another weak point, falling short in certain locations, as noted by Digital Foundry.

Overall, it seems Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is best played in the quality mode for now. The game holds its 30FPS target well in this mode, making the trade-off worth it for the superior image quality.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is quite an ambitious release, but Square Enix seems to have missed a few presentation flaws before release. This might make the game less intriguing for those fond of 60FPS gameplay, but the reviews state that this JRPG is still very much worth playing.
