Sony Officially Working on PC Compatibility!

Story Highlights
  • PS VR2 launched for the PS5 last year.
  • This headset offers various games but does not support hardware other than PlayStation.
  • Sony’s latest blog confirms this is changing soon, with PC compatibility in the works.

VR gaming has grown at an incredible pace since the last generation. Like other technologies, PlayStation hopes to remain at the forefront of VR gaming on consoles, launching the PS VR2 last year.

The headset has shown impressive results in PS5 games like Gran Turismo 7, but demand for PC support has always existed. According to a new blog post, Sony is now working toward fulfilling this demand.

Why it matters: PS VR2 costs more than the PS5 itself. Therefore, limited support was a huge handicap for this virtual reality headset.

VR Is A Game-Changer For Gran Turismo 7

PlayStation’s latest blog discusses the goal of PS VR2 compatibility for PCs to allow a larger variety of games for virtual reality fans. Sony hopes to support the PC platform by the end of the year, though it did not provide an exact timeline.

There’s already a vast portfolio of games for this VR headset. While Gran Turismo 7 is often considered the most impressive, the likes of Resident Evil 4 are no slouch either, offering immersive gameplay.

However, PC gaming is by far the biggest platform for VR. This makes it an enticing market for Sony. Various headsets already exist for this platform, but the PS VR2 is in a unique position.

For $550, this headset offers a balance between price and features. Therefore, with a library of games like Half-Life Alyx, PS VR2 could find new life on this platform through a brand new audience.

Meanwhile, games like Superhot VR, Beat Saber, and more are equally compelling to try for VR enthusiasts on PC.

PlayStation Has Experimented With VR for Multiple Generations

While PlayStation seems to be committed to this product, the decision to move away from the console ecosystem suggests that PS VR2 underperformed in the market.

Still, it could be another extension of Sony’s recent multi-platform strategy. President Hiroki Totoki finds PC gaming more appealing than past Sony executives, promising a major push for this market in the future.
