GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super Disappoints With Barely Any Performance Boost

Not Even 10% Faster Than 4070 Ti On Average!

Story Highlights
  • Nvidia’s latest Super launch is less than 10% faster than its predecessor in real-world testing.
  • It offers more memory, making it a bit better in VRAM-hungry games.
  • Most reviewers believe this launch was unnecessary and disappointing.
  • The Radeon RX 7900 XT is a better purchase, priced closer to $700.

The GeForce RTX 40 Super series had a lot of anticipation behind it after leaks promised competitive pricing and impressive performance. Among the three cards, the RTX 4070 Ti Super was expected to be the biggest upgrade, offering more VRAM in addition to a performance boost at the same price.

However, following a poor launch for the RTX 4070 Super, initial reviews of Nvidia’s second launch in 2024 have been quite disappointing, showcasing that the first Ti Super graphics card does not bring much to the table.

In terms of performance, you are barely getting much besides the extra memory. The following images from Hardware Unboxed show the minuscule difference in frame rates between the two graphics cards.

Buyers are effectively getting a scaled-down version of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 for $799.99, with 16GB of GDDR6X memory and a larger 256-bit memory. Although this is an upgrade over the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti, the difference is not meaningful enough.

According to most reviews, the Ti Super variant is 2-5% faster than the base model. On the other hand, the Radeon RX 7900 XT is 5-10% faster than the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super.

Many reviewers note that Asus’ latest vBios update can improve performance by up to 5% in certain scenarios. However, even with the update, we reckon the Ti Super will end up less than 10% faster than its predecessor on average.

Hardware Unboxed puts it best, stating:

“Seems about as unnecessary as the name.”

Meanwhile, Steve from Gamers Nexus said:

“This launch can be summed up as MEH.”

These statements highlight the general stance reviewers have taken around the launch, dubbing it underwhelming and disappointing.

There is also no Founders Edition available for the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super. Rather, a few board partners, such as Asus, MSI, and others, will be offering custom models.

The presence of the Radeon RX 7900 XT further complicates things for Nvidia. Gaming performance-wise, the only excuse to get your hands on the expensive GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super would be ray tracing performance.

Everywhere else, the Radeon RX 7900 XT is a much better buy, considering it can be bought for as low as $700.

The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super is basically a refreshed version of the base card with more VRAM, which, admittedly, is a much-needed addition since current-generation games are more memory-hungry.

However, the MSRP of the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super puts it in a tight spot, making it hard to justify the $800 asking price without performance uplifts of around 15-20% over its predecessor.
