1997 FPS Getting Remasterd!

The Quake franchise is among the earliest examples of exceptional titles in the FPS genre. While the franchise has not found a modern hit on par with other FPS games, classic entries continue to be popular among veterans of the genre.

A new report hints that id Software is looking to bring back a classic title from the Quake franchise, with an announcement likely for QuakeCon 2023. The game in question is Quake 2 from 1997.

Why it matters: Quake laid the groundwork for the modern FPS genre, standing among games like Doom and Wolfenstein as one of the forefathers of FPS gaming.

Quake 2 Enhanced Edition Remaster

As reported by Dealabs, the announcement is expected to be made on August 11. QuakeCon will run from August 10 to August 13 in 2023. The event is returning with an in-person gathering after several years since 2019.

Last month, Quake 2 Remastered was rated in Korea. This led to speculation about the game making a comeback, and the report appears to confirm that this is the case. However, the term ‘remaster’ will not be used in the title.

The report also reveals that Quake 2 is coming to nearly all platforms, including last-generation consoles and the Nintendo Switch.

Despite previous speculations about exclusivity for all future Bethesda games, the game is expected to also arrive on the PS4 and PS5.

While not much is known about the extent of the remaster, the first game received a similar treatment in 2021. This should allow fans to know what to expect when anticipating a remaster of Quake 2.

Nonetheless, this is great news for fans of classic FPS games and the Quake franchise. The remaster will likely introduce a new audience to the game, bringing the nearly three-decade-old FPS to life.
