Multiversus Has Lost 99% Of Its Daily Steam Peak Counts

Multiversus Is Dying?

Multiversus brings various characters from Warner Brothers together into a platform fighting game. With characters like Superman, Bugs Bunny, and Shaggy, Multiversus had the perfect recipe for a successful crossover game.

Initially, the game saw lots of popularity thanks to the many fanbases that enjoyed the character roster. However, Multiversus’ popularity has also died down just as quickly, with the game losing 99% of its daily Steam peak player counts.

Recently, Multiversus saw daily Steam peaks below 1000 for the first time since the game was released. For reference, the all-time high concurrent peak for Multiversus stands at over 150K players on Steam.

Multiversus is also a free-to-play game with a live-service model. The last few weeks have shown that all but a few live service games are rapidly failing, and Multiversus appears to be in trouble in a similar fashion.

Fighting games have traditionally seen much lower player counts than other gaming genres. Factors, such as the difficulty of the genre, contribute to this niche appeal. Still, many had expected Multiversus to break away from this trend due to the popularity of its characters.

Like any live-service game, a consistent and quality content rollout is essential to keep the game healthy and active. However, Multiversus saw a single DLC character in season 2 in three months, and season 3 has also been delayed to March 31. This has likely pushed players away from the game.

Since Multiversus is free-to-play, it also features extensive micro-transactions. and certain cosmetic skins can cost up to $15. While microtransaction costs this high are not exclusive to Multiversus, players may have found themselves pushed away from the game because of these prices.

Another crossover game, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, met an even worse fate, standing at less than 100 Steam players over the last 24 hours. Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl includes popular characters like Spongebob, Avatar Aang, and Danny Phantom, but the game has failed to remain relevant since its release in 2021.

With season 3 set to begin in March, developer Player First Games has another shot at bringing players back to the crossover fighting game and avoiding losing its players, similar to a crossover game like Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl.
