Stray Movie On The Way!

After the recent success of the animated adventure movie Nimona, Annapurna Animation is looking to explore more projects in the near future, and one of them is based on Stray.

Stray was released last year and became one of the most popular debuts in the indie gaming industry. It went on to receive several accolades and was nominated for Game of The Year at TGA 2022.

Following the title’s success, an animated movie based on Stray is in development.

Why it matters: Gaming adaptations like Sonic and The Last of Us have encouraged more studios to bring their games to the big screen. Successful releases have also led to projects that are more serious about the source material.

Stray

During a recent interview with EW, Robert Baird from Annapurna Animation talked about the studio’s future projects. While addressing the motivation behind a Stray adaptation, he said:

“This is a game that’s all about what makes us human, and there are no humans in it.”

He went on to say that the feeling of being lost in a desolate world as a lone cat was one of the biggest reasons for the game’s popularity.

Over the course of the game, players also explore a unique dynamic as the cat interacts with robots, leading to charming yet hilarious moments for the rest of the adventure.

Robert Baird said that the movie would be fun to watch as it would explore the popular dynamic that was enjoyed by over 4 million players on PlayStation.

Stray

Annapurna Animation is confident that the IP can be adapted into a great film suitable for fans and newcomers, using the strengths of the game’s narrative and atmospheric storytelling.

Since the project is in early development, not much else was revealed about the Stray adaptation. Therefore, fans should not expect more details anytime soon.

In the meantime, gamers can revisit or try the game for the first time. Stray is now available on more platforms than before, recently joining the Xbox platform, where it immediately clawed its way to the top of the best-sellers rankings.
