SOCOM is among the most enjoyed franchises released on PlayStation consoles. Despite its popularity, PlayStation has shown no interest in a revival, upsetting many fans.
However, if recent hints are anything to go by, things are changing for the better. An actor’s profile suggests that a new entry in the franchise has been under development for some time.
Why it matters: SOCOM was among the original online multiplayer games on the PS2, exploding in popularity thanks to more mature themes and varied gameplay compared to the rest of this console’s library.
As seen on actoraccess.com, actor David Veach appears to be working on SOCOM 111 as a motion capture co-star. While many would believe this could be a typo for SOCOM 3, social media users have pointed out that he isn’t credited for any of the past games.
Therefore, it suggests that a brand new entry is under development. Zipper Interactive, the main studio responsible for SOCOM, was shut down by Sony in 2012, and since then, no new game has seen the light of day.
The new activity suggests Sony has partnered with another studio. With the gaming giant having more teams under its belt than before, it is possible that SOCOM will finally return during this generation.
A new SOCOM game has also been rumoured for the better part of the last five years.
With PlayStation more involved in live service than before, this series could be used for an experimental project. Sony has been willing to use older IPs like Twisted Metal for similar projects.
However, the latter was recently canceled after Sony’s layoff spree.
Anyhow, a SOCOM revival is expected to create waves of excitement.
Like many other dormant PlayStation IPs, this series has an avid fanbase today. SOCOM had the potential to become PlayStation’s definitive multiplayer IP, so a new game could realize its potential in the modern era.
