According to a new report, Capcom has internally delayed the ninth mainline release.
Why it matters: Resident Evil 9 already has the longest development cycle of any game. This delay gives the developers even more time to polish the project, nearly guaranteeing a very ambitious entry.
According to Dusk Golem, a renowned leaker with a record of reliable leaks for this series, another Resident Evil game is in development. He states that the internal delay could mean this game arrives before Resident Evil 9.

This also suggests that the ninth mainline entry is much more ambitious than recent releases. Resident Evil has stuck to a relatively safe formula of remakes and first-person entries for the last few years, but this could change soon.
Resident Evil 9 is said to be open-world, so Capcom’s decision to take its time with the project may be a wise one. As for the next game, the publisher could decide to fall back on another remake till then.
Dusk Golem states that Resident Evil 9 was set to be revealed in 2024, so the team may announce a remake instead. There is already evidence that suggests a remake of Resident Evil 5 is up next, and Capcom has also shown interest in revisiting Code Veronica.
Capcom’s remake strategy is efficient and highly successful. Therefore, it seems reasonable to expect another project sooner rather than later. The studio has also released its games in intervals of two years, so a 2025 launch also seems likely.
Resident Evil 4 will be two years old by then, allowing the publisher to release another game. Meanwhile, recent releases like Dragon’s Dogma 2 have continued the streak of successful games from the team.
