Story Highlight
  • Overwatch 2’s new $80 Mythic weapon skin is getting significant backlash from the community.
  • Fans are labeling it a “scam” and questioning the value proposition.
  • Alternative ways to obtain the skin exist through battle pass progression but require significant time investment.

Overwatch 2 has once again found itself under intense scrutiny from its player base. The latest controversy is about a new weapon skin that costs $80, which many players are calling a clear “scam.”

The skin in question is a mythic weapon skin for a popular hero in the game. Although expensive skins are not new, the cost of this one has sparked a lot of anger among Overwatch players.

Fans feel that charging so much for a cosmetic item is unfair, especially since the price is similar to that of a new AAA game.

Why it matters: Microtransactions are getting out of hand with each passing day. It’s time people start asking for more clarity from developers on how they set prices and how much of the cost supports game development compared to profit.

80 Prisms for Weapon Skins is a scam

Blizzard recently introduced Overwatch 2’s first Mythic weapon skin, the Bound Demon skin for Reinhardt, in the Season 11 trailer. While the reveal was exciting, the price was not mentioned at first, causing players to guess how much it would cost.

Before the skin was released, many players thought it would cost a bit less than a full Mythic hero skin, which is priced at 80 Mythic Prisms.

However, it turned out that the Bound Demon skin also costs 80 Mythic Prisms, which is about $80 if bought directly without using Prisms from the Premium Battle Pass.

Although buying the skin directly is expensive, there are other ways to get it without paying $80 upfront. Players who finish their Premium Battle Pass will earn enough Mythic Prisms to get the skin.

The Premium Battle Pass costs about $10, but collecting 80 Mythic Prisms through gameplay will require a lot of time investment.

The community’s response has been quick and loud, and they did not take it lightly. Many players have voiced their frustration on social media and gaming forums.

A popular post on the Overwatch subreddit labeled the pricing a “scam,” reflecting the community’s belief that it’s too expensive.

Another person pointed out that getting all the visual elements of the skin would cost around $80, or about $70 just for the weapon inspection feature, which isn’t available in Overwatch 2 yet.

With that price, you’d think you’re getting new content or new features for the game. However, this skin provides no additional functionality or gameplay advantage, making the $80 price tag even more difficult to justify.

Anyhow, despite all these controversies, Overwatch 2 seems to be doing great, as it reached 50 million active players. Perhaps, the majority of gamers have become too accepting of microtransactions.
