Like It Or Not, Upscaling Is Here to Stay!

Story Highlight
  • More than 80% of Nvidia RTX card owners turn on DLSS for supported games.
  • A new stat by Nvidia shows how the numbers have increased by manifolds over the years.
  • Despite getting criticized for making devs lazy, upscaling tech is here to stay.

AI upscaling technologies are a vital part of gaming nowadays. Manufacturers spend a big chunk of their keynotes talking about how they’ve improved it over its predecessor. The common ones include Nvidia’s DLSS, AMD’s FSR, and Intel’s XeSS.

Ahead of the launch of its latest DLSS 4 with RTX 50 series, Nvidia has released a new stat that shows how the usage of DLSS has multiplied since the time it was released.

Why it matters: Upscaling has become a significant part of games, especially now when the system requirements are astronomically high for modern games. DLSS provides a nice balance between visuals and higher FPS.

This stat shows how the usage of DLSS has increased over time

According to data from Nvidia, provided to Editor days, over 80% of Nvidia RTX GPU users (including RTX 20, 30, and 40 series) turn on DLSS for their games. So, while AI upscaling is criticized at times, whether players like it or not, it’s here to stay.

The announcement of the RTX 50 series card put a huge emphasis on DLSS 4. Nvidia even said that with its upscaling tech, the upcoming GeForce RTX 5070 will match the performance of the GeForce RTX 4090, at just $549.

If DLSS is indeed as popular as the stats make it out to be, most people will be happy with what they’re getting because they would’ve turned on DLSS in the first place. It can even help with better visual quality in certain conditions.

However, upscaling tech is also criticized by gamers as they say it makes the developers lazy with optimizations. Instead of scaling games for different hardware, they just rely on DLSS or FSR, which in certain cases is true.
