- Microsoft has laid off around 15,000 employees this year, which has raised many concerns.
- The gaming giant did so to invest more in AI, as it is apparently the future.
- Ironically, the company is hiring more people in the graphics department with a really poorly generated AI image.
Microsoft recently laid off thousands of employees in two waves. The first one occurred a few weeks ago, when the company laid off around 4,000 employees. Now, just recently, in another wave, the company cut a whopping 9,000 jobs.
This started a massive controversy, which caused fans to even boycott Xbox by cancelling their Game Pass subscription. Following the layoffs and backlash, the gaming giant is again hiring people, but is using a really poorly generated AI image.
Why it matters: Justifying layoffs in any industry almost never works out unless the whole team messes up pretty badly, like Firewalk Studios did with Concord.
The Principal Lead Development of the Xbox Graphics team, Mike Matsel, recently posted on LinkedIn about hiring people for the concerned department.
The Xbox Graphics team is hiring folks with experience with device drivers, GPU performance, or related validation or engineering system experience.

Above, you can see how poorly the hiring image is, and it clearly looks like an AI one. The screen is also on the backside of the monitor, and the table isn’t complete. This is pretty ironic, given that Microsoft laid off thousands of employees to invest more in AI.
For those who may say it is a transparent display, it clearly doesn’t look like one at all. This is pretty embarrassing for the company as it laid off employees to focus on the AI technology, and the lead of one of its main departments can’t use the same tech.
While laying off employees is unfortunate, almost every company does so. In fact, Sony has laid more many more employees than Microsoft. For those not in the know, Sony has laid off around 5 times more employees than Microsoft since 2008.
However, laying off people to invest in something and not being able to utilise it properly is something else. Even fans are claiming it’s embarrassing and lazy, and you can’t blame them now, can you?
