The PS5 is quickly approaching its sixth anniversary, and rumors regarding the PS6 have begun to pick up the pace. Sony’s next PlayStation console is expected to launch as early as 2027, pushing ray-tracing and machine learning as two of its biggest selling points.

However, in terms of pure rasterization performance, the PS6 may not offer as big a leap as its predecessors. This is why a developer believes Sony may find it difficult to sell the console to existing PS5 gamers.

Why it matters: The PS5 does not offer as big an upgrade over the PS4 as the PS4 did over the PS3. For PlayStation, the next console will likely repeat this cycle.

On a recent episode of Broken Silicon, Moore’s Law is Dead spoke to Matt from Alderon Games, discussing the next generation of consoles and the industry’s landscape with the developer.

On the subject of the PS6, the two were asked to share their thoughts on the performance jump from the PS5 to the PS6 and how it would be perceived by general audiences. Matt, being a developer, noted that he is quite excited about the ray-tracing potential of the upcoming consoles.

However, he confirmed that 30-40% of PlayStation players engage with Alderon Games’ titles on PS4. The developer believes that because Sony has struggled to bring PS4 players to PS5, the same jump might be even more difficult from the PS5 to PS6.

He argues that path tracing and machine learning alone may not be enough, especially when considering how capable the PS5 Pro already is.

Sony has had a hard time getting people off PS4. The real question’s going to be, are those people going to see a difference noticeable enough?

Let’s say you already have a PS5 Pro; are you really going to upgrade for a ray-tracing improvement?

On the other hand, the developer believes that gamers who skipped the PS5 would be more inclined toward upgrading since the console would offer a huge jump in graphical fidelity and performance over the PS4.

Of course, pricing will also play a key role in the fate of the PS6. At the moment, the PS6 is expected to be around 2x more capable than the PS5 Pro in rasterization and 3-6x more capable in ray-tracing workloads.

Leaked specifications point to a 10 Zen 6 cores (8 Zen 6c + 2 Zen 6 LP) CPU and a 54CU RDNA 5 GPU (52CUs usable) for the console, in addition to 30-40GB of memory.
