Valve Set To Challenge Both PlayStation and Xbox With New Hardware!

Story Highlight
  • Valve has announced the Steam Machine, Steam Frame, and Steam Controller.
  • The Steam Machine offers a console-like gateway to PC gaming, thanks to SteamOS and solid hardware.
  • The hardware is said to be powered by a 28CU RDNA 3 GPU, allowing it to trade blows with home consoles like the PS5.

Valve has found plenty of success in the hardware market with the Steam Deck, and it seems the company is keen on continuing this success. Following recent rumors, the gaming giant has announced three new pieces of hardware.

Among them, a brand new Steam Machine has been revealed, becoming the center of attention.

Why it matters: Xbox intended to offer a PC-like experience with its next-gen console. It seems Valve has just beaten Microsoft to the punch.

Dubbed the Steam Machine, Valve’s upcoming hardware is advertised as a PC capable of playing the latest and greatest AAA titles.

Much like the Steam Deck, the Steam Machine will run SteamOS and support existing Steam libraries. Valve says the upcoming hardware is a whopping 6x more powerful than the Steam Deck, making it well-equipped for most of the platform’s current library.

As for the specifications, Digital Foundry reveals a 6-core/ 12-thread Zen 4-based CPU setup along with 16GB of DDR5 memory. The Steam Machine is also said to be equipped with a 28CU RDNA 3 GPU running at up to 2.45GHz and a 110W TDP.

For context, the base PS5 ships with a 36CU RDNA 2 GPU and an 8-core/16-thread Zen 2 CPU. Depending on the price, then, Valve’s hardware should be quite the capable offering for current-gen games while supporting features like ray-tracing.

Of course, this is not the first time Valve has tried its hand at dedicated console-like hardware. However, with vital experience gained from the Steam Deck, the company should be able to avoid the failures of its last attempt at exploring this market.

The Steam Machine will also position Valve as a direct competitor to both PlayStation and Xbox. Moreover, it will become the home of both PlayStation and Xbox titles for those seeking a PC experience in a console-like form factor.

Valve has also announced the Steam Frame and Steam Controller. The former is a new VR headset, and the latter will complement the new Steam hardware for PC/console gaming.

What do you think about the Steam Machine from Valve? Do you think it will offer a solid option to those seeking a console-like experience from PC gaming? Share your thoughts in the comments and on the Tech4Gamers Forums.
