PlayStation became well known for its AAA first-party releases throughout the last generation. Over the last few years, many of these games have slowly made their way onto the PC platform.
Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection is the latest PlayStation release on PC. The game combines the last two entries in the franchise, introducing PC players to the charming characters of Naughty Dog’s successful series. Despite the franchise’s popularity, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection is now shaping to be PlayStation’s weakest launch on PC.
Uncharted has always been among PlayStation’s flagship franchises. The series began on the PlayStation 3 with a less-than-stellar first title. However, subsequent games saw rapid improvements, and Uncharted quickly became among the greatest names in the PlayStation catalog.
Uncharted 4 was received exceptionally well by fans and critics. The game was seen as a technical achievement upon release, and Naughty Dog was praised for their storytelling. Therefore, it is surprising to see a lukewarm response for the title on PC.
Some of this could be attributed to the fact that Naughty Dog has only released the last two games on PC. This means PC players cannot experience Nathan Drake’s entire story and are less compelled to jump into the franchise’s middle.
While Uncharted 4 and Lost Legacy are playable as stand-alone titles, the Uncharted trilogy would have served as a fantastic introduction to Nathan Drake’s story. However, it does not look like PlayStation is planning on a PC release for the Uncharted trilogy anytime soon.
Furthermore, recent releases like Spider-Man Remastered came close to 65000 concurrent Steam players shortly after release. This is nearly six times higher than the Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection’s highest player counts. Titles like God of War have shown even higher player counts, adding to the disappointment of the latest release.
Spider-Man Remastered was also seen as PlayStation’s most successful PC release in the UK. However, it does not look like Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection will be able to reach similar numbers.
Despite the weak numbers, the latest release has a lot to offer for brand-new players. Uncharted 4 is among the greatest games from the PlayStation 4 generation, and Uncharted: Lost Legacy serves as a fantastic spin-off.
PlayStation is fully invested in the PC gaming ecosystem and could offer live-service games from day one on PC. Moreover, new releases like Sackboy: A Big Adventure are headed to PC soon, while a PC port for Returnal has also been heavily rumored.
Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection may not have been the massive success that PlayStation had hoped for, but it seems to be an exception among several PlayStation games on PC. It remains to be seen if PlayStation will fully capitalize on the PC market, but the future looks promising.
