Story Highlight
  • Tomb Raider is reportedly going open-world with the next game.
  • A leaker suggests this entry will be set in India and offer a bike for freedom in traversal.
  • The game could be ready for release in 2025.

Tomb Raider has always been one of gaming’s most iconic action-adventure games. Having found its roots as an action platformer, the franchise has grown to resemble modern action games with scripted set pieces mixed with more open levels for exploration in recent years.

A report claims Crystal Dynamics intends to go all-in on the latter for the next game. According to a leaker, the upcoming Tomb Raider entry will take Lara Croft into an open world.

Why it matters: Tomb Raider has been away from the industry for many years, so a fresh experience may be the key to capturing everyone’s attention.

The report comes from a source familiar with the film and TV industry, giving it a lot of credibility due to a history of accurate leaks.

According to the source, Lara Croft’s next adventure will see her venturing into India. Sources also suggest the character will always have access to a motorcycle and a parachute for traversal.

The narrative is expected to revolve around a natural disaster striking northern India to reveal the ancient emperor Ashoka’s artifacts. This sets Lara’s plans in motion as she races against a raider society and other rivals to gain these artifacts.

Moreover, Crystal Dynamics seems to have already wrapped up most of this project’s work. The leaker suggests a release in one year is within the realm of possibilities, granted the project does not suffer unexpected delays.

This would give the game three years of full production, considering Crystal Dynamics and Amazon confirmed the project in mid-2022. The leak also means a reveal could be coming up at one of the many gaming showcases lined up for this summer.

Rise of the Tomb Raider
The Entire Tomb Raider Trilogy Is Currently Available on Game Pass

With Tomb Raider potentially launching in 2025, the game will find itself without much competition. Indiana Jones is set to debut this year, but its focus on first-person gameplay should instantly separate it from Lara Croft’s third-person adventures.

Naughty Dog is also focused on a new IP, so Tomb Raider can finally step out of Uncharted’s shadow after many years.

Nonetheless, pursuing an open-world formula is quickly becoming the norm for major AAA studios. While Tomb Raider seems to be the latest to follow suit, we certainly don’t expect it to be the last.
