Devs Also Wanted Multiplayer For Sequel!

Story Highlight
  • The Order 1886 failed to make an impact, but the team wanted a highly ambitious sequel.
  • Plans for the sequel included bigger battles and multiplayer.
  • The studio focused on the gameplay aspect of the sequel compared to the cinematic presentation.

By the end of the generation, the PS4 became well-known for its first-party releases, but the console also had a few lesser-appreciated games during its first few years. Among them, The Order 1886 remains one of the more notable titles, with many agreeing that it had a lot of missed potential.

Although a sequel was cancelled against the developers’ wishes, they have shared a few plans for what the next game in The Order 1886 franchise would have been like. As per the studio, the sequel would have been more ambitious in multiple ways.

Why it matters: Although The Order 1886 failed to come out swinging, fans recognized that the franchise had potential. Many still believe it should receive a 60FPS upgrade for the PS5, signifying lingering interest in the IP.

Speaking to Julien Chieze, the game’s Creative Director discussed what shape a potential sequel would have taken.

As per his statement, the next game was set to expand the battles in The Order 1886. For the unaware, The Order 1886 attempted to deliver a movie-like experience, so the combat was very limited and linear.

As per Creative Director Ru Weerasuriya, the battles would be opened up for the sequel for a more gameplay-focused experience. The decision to add ‘bigger battles’ was also made to address much of the criticism regarding the game.

Moreover, the team intended to add multiplayer for the future release, further showing a commitment to gameplay over cinematics and storytelling.

The Order: 1886 Could Have Been Much Better

Unfortunately, The Order 1886 was lambasted widely upon release, so PlayStation did not feel the need to greenlight a sequel. The odds of a sequel happening went down further once hits like God of War and Spider-Man established a slate of iconic first-party titles for PlayStation to expand.

What are your thoughts on the studio’s ambitions for a sequel? Do you think the second game would have been better? Let’s discuss in the comments and on the Tech4Gamers Forums.
