The servers for The Crew were shut down last year, causing major backlash in the gaming industry. Players were furious with Ubisoft’s decision, and the criticism hasn’t died down since. With the company’s reputation already under fire, it even faced a lawsuit over the shutdown.
Despite this, Ubisoft held its ground, reiterating that games are merely licenses. The company also updated its EULA to state that it reserves the right to shut down any game at any time, showing no intention of ever bringing The Crew back.
That’s where modders stepped in. Taking matters into their own hands, they will be bringing the game back online on September 15.
Why it matters: Modders continue to play a crucial role in the gaming industry, often stepping in where developers fall short. For instance, the community even managed to get Bloodborne running on PC.
The modders and community have done it again. When Ubisoft showed no signs of listening to its fans, the modding community stepped up and delivered. The Crew will officially be playable again on September 15, 2025.
The team behind the project has been working on it for a long time and has finally broken the silence with a major update.
In their latest progress report shared via Discord, they confirmed that the server emulator is now feature-complete for a 1.0 release. The custom TCU launcher is also finished, and the official website is live.
All that remains is thorough testing before launch. The team also thanked the community for its support, noting that years of hard work and effort had finally paid off.
All that is left to do is to thoroughly test and validate the software, then prepare the release.
