PC Only Accounts For 8% of Take-Two’s Overall Revenue

Explains Why GTA 6 Skipping PC Day One!

Story Highlight
  • Take-Two’s updated financial numbers highlight a major divide between PC and console/mobile gaming revenue.
  • The former accounted for 8% of all revenue, while consoles and mobile gaming were responsible for 92% of all earnings.
  • This divide shows why GTA 6 launching as a console exclusive makes sense from a business perspective.

There has been much debate over Take-Two and Rockstar Games’ practices of prioritizing console gaming. Despite the overall growth of the PC platform in recent years, titles like the Red Dead Redemption remaster were released much later on PC than on consoles.

Similarly, GTA 6 is said to be skipping PC in 2025, disappointing the millions of active gamers on this platform. As shocking as this decision may be, a new report highlights exactly why Take-Two prioritizes consoles above everything else.

The publisher’s latest revenue figures highlight that PC gaming accounts for just 8% of all earnings.

Why it matters: Fans still believe the decision to limit GTA 6 to PS5 and Xbox Series S|X at release is unwise. This report shows otherwise and explains Rockstar Games’ approach.

Take-Two Earnings FY24
FY24 Earnings Breakdown via Take-Two

The gaming giant’s latest slides highlight that 40% of all the revenue from FY24 came from consoles. This is not surprising since GTA Online is a major cash cow for the publisher, and the PS4 accounts for most of its online player base.

More surprising is the fact that mobile gaming is responsible for 52% of all revenue, leaving PC with just 8% of the overall share despite major games from 2K and other studios being quite popular on the platform.

Because PC is still Take-Two’s smallest market, it makes sense for a studio like Rockstar Games to prioritize the PS5 and Xbox Series S|X for GTA 6. This is also cost-effective since working with a select few hardware configurations is more convenient for a major title like GTA 6.

Rockstar Games’ focus on double-dip purchases is yet another important factor in this decision. Because Grand Theft Auto is such a household name, millions of sales are practically guaranteed on all platforms, even with a delayed launch.

GTA 6 Marketing Will Kick Off When Rockstar Games Is Ready

As per Take-Two, GTA 6 is still on track for a 2025 release. This statement implies the game is just over 10 months away, so marketing should ramp up sometime in the near future.  Till then, it may be worth considering a console purchase for PC gamers looking to get a glimpse at Grand Theft Auto’s latest offering in 2025.
