Deal Collapsed Due To Disagreements Over Long-term IP Ownership!

Story Highlight
  • Following major layoffs at Xbox, Perfect Dark was canceled.
  • Take-Two saw this as an opportunity and made a deal with the developer to fund and publish the game.
  • The deal ultimately collapsed at the last minute due to disagreements over long-term IP ownership.

Perfect Dark, once expected to launch next year, was recently canceled following Microsoft’s sweeping layoffs. These cuts affected multiple studios, resulting in both canceled projects and significant job losses.

Among the casualties was Perfect Dark, one of Xbox’s most anticipated games. However, a new report suggests the project nearly survived. Take-Two was close to striking a deal with Crystal Dynamics to continue development, but talks collapsed at the last minute.

Why it matters: Perfect Dark was a highly anticipated Xbox release, and its revival could have salvaged years of hype and given fans hope.

Perfect Dark Was So Close To Being Revived.

According to Bloomberg, one of the most reliable sources for gaming news, Take-Two had made an offer to Crystal Dynamics to continue Perfect Dark’s development.

However, both companies were unable to reach an agreement regarding the long-term ownership of the IP, which ultimately led to the deal collapsing at the last minute. Following this, the developer was also hit with layoffs.

Reports suggest that Take-Two wanted full control of the franchise in order to fund development and eventually publish the game. Microsoft, however, had a different stance and was unwilling to give up ownership of the IP.

It is also worth noting that just last week, Crystal Dynamics announced a round of layoffs. These cuts are believed to be a direct consequence of the failed deal. So, it’s fair to assume that Perfect Dark may no longer have a future.

The game initially impressed fans with its gameplay reveal, sparking excitement across the industry. Later, it was confirmed that the title was already in development for both the PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2.

However, insiders had warned early on that the project was in very rough shape, and not long after, it was ultimately canceled.

Adding to the disappointment, the game’s lead actor even urged fans to rally support in hopes of reviving the project, but with recent developments, that possibility now seems out of reach.
