Sony plans to use heavy AI in game production going forward. The CFO says that it is just a tool, and not a threat. It can help speed up tasks, but it cannot replace entire development teams or become a business.

Why it matters: Generative AI can indeed accelerate game development by doing tasks that normally take a lot of time manually, but handcrafted assets and other intricate core elements will always be superior.

Sony wants to use a lot of AI for game production

During their recent Investor Call, Sony CFO Lin Tao expressed support for the use of AI in game production. She says it’s just another tool in the toolbox, and not something their studios should be scared of

What we can say right now is to use a lot of AI (in game production). I don’t think it’s a threat, and the creators can use AI in a fast way.

The company sees it as a tool rather than a threat.

They will use AI extensively in production, but that doesn’t mean it’ll replace developers or become a focal point of the business. In fact, they’ll keep it in check and integrate it into development to help the developers.

The topic of gen AI in games has become rather sensitive. Some fans and developers strongly oppose it, while others don’t mind it. Nonetheless, its tasteful use can help, and it is directed as the future of game development.
