Story Highlight
  • Silent Hill f producer says that unless big companies with money take risks, the industry will stagnate.
  • He asks young developers to convince their publishers to try something different.
  • His work on Silent Hill f is a testament to that matter, and the game’s performance figures speak for themselves.

One of the primary reasons why indie and AA games are thriving so much in today’s climate, even outselling major AAA games, is a simple one: risk-taking. Typically, big publishers are cautious nowadays, with AAA game budgets exceeding hundreds of millions of dollars; there is little to no room for failure.

Silent Hill f producer has weighed in on this matter. The developer says that unless big companies with money take risks, the economy and industry won’t move forward at all.

Why it matters: The Majority of video games nowadays are homogenous, and every publisher is too busy replicating the success of other games.

Renowned Developer On The Industry’s Way Forward

Posting on social media, Motoi Okamoto discussed how indie devs use promotional videos and crowd response to decide whether to make the game or not. He also stated that big publishers can’t do the same without risking damage to their brand image.

As such, Okamoto urges young developers to convince their companies to take proper risks. However, he does understand that inexperienced staff members can’t actually force companies to take these steps, but veterans shouldn’t walk this path.

Still, the producer’s statement is essentially on point, suggesting that without undertaking risks, the industry has no way forward.

It’s about putting your money where your mouth is.

Okamoto’s latest work on Silent Hill f is a testament to his claims. Taking the series to Japan for the first time, and with an unconventional combat system, the horror game was actually quite well received.

That said, future Silent Hill games will follow a different formula to avoid repetitiveness.

Furthermore, the success of recent games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Hollow Knight has forced publishers to rethink their approach. Gamers aren’t willing to spend money on something that doesn’t sound appealing or different.
