Retail Version Fails To Impress!

Story Highlight
  • Leaked footage from the final Silent Hill 2 Remake build is quite disappointing.
  • The remade scene depicting Maria and James’ first meeting is not nearly as engaging as the original.
  • While fans appreciate James’ voice acting, they have not been too impressed with other aspects.

Following a disappointing reveal and underwhelming trailers, Silent Hill 2 Remake was finally beginning to convince audiences with recent footage.

The buzz surrounding this iconic horror entry increased further after encouraging previews from various media sites, but fans have become skeptical of Bloober Team’s work yet again. Following leaks from the retail build, Silent Hill 2 Remake looks underwhelming yet again.

Why it matters: Unlike other big-budget re-releases, this title has always faced an uphill battle. This has become evident in the latest reactions to leaked footage.

Fans recently commented on a direct comparison highlighting one important scene from Silent Hill 2. This comparison shows James meeting Maria for the first time, and it’s immediately obvious that Bloober Team’s work isn’t an all-around upgrade.

While James’ voice acting is much better and the foggy environments look quite ominous, Maria loses a touch of spookiness that was always found in the original game due to her new model.

Moreover, the interaction between these two characters comes across as awkward due to stiff animations. In the comments, fans also noted that the remake does not do Maria justice compared to her original portrayal.

Elsewhere, a different comparison shows a similarly underwhelming translation of one particular scene related to Angela. While the voice acting in this scene is strong, Bloober Team’s character models and animations disappoint yet again.

It remains to be seen how the full game will turn out, but these comparisons are quite concerning. Silent Hill 2 Remake had already gathered plenty of negative press, but Bloober Team was finally beginning to turn things around.

The team’s latest project has even received a strong 35/40 score from Famitsu. This suggests that the title will have its fair share of strengths and weaknesses, potentially making for an inconsistent experience.

Nonetheless, Konami is set to bring the series back with this re-release on October 8. The review embargo will also be lifted tomorrow, so fans won’t have to wait too long for more direct comparisons with the original.
