- Geoff Keighley, TGA host, changed the nomination rules just two days before announcing the nominees.
- This was done mainly to nominate Shadow of the Erdtree for the GOTY award.
- This suspicious activity and my experience with the DLC almost confirm that it is going to win the award.
The Game Awards is nearing its 10th anniversary, which will happen on 12 December 2024. Many fans are excited to see their favorite game-winning awards during the event. However, one game shines the most in such events, and I already have an idea of how the events will unfold.
Elden Ring dominated TGA 2022 as Game of the Year, and it seems like history will repeat this year. Given how massive the game’s DLC is, it was nominated for GOTY at TGA 2024, which almost ensures that it will win the award.
Why it matters: Changing policies for a DLC to be nominated in the best award category is suspicious if it is done for the first time ever in 10 years.
Changing Policies Just 2 Days Before Announcing Nominees
Everything was going fine; fans were expecting which games would be nominated for the GOTY award and whether Black Myth: Wukong would be done justice.
Right when fans were expecting their favorite game to be nominated, Geoff Keighley bent the rules in order to nominate none other than Elden Ring DLC for the most prestigious award.
Was this natural? No. Was it just a coincidence? No. How so? Let me explain. First of all, the rules were changed just 2 days before the official nominees were supposed to be announced. This ensured that there wouldn’t be much backlash, and there wasn’t.
Of course, fans were infuriated, but honestly, I didn’t see much backlash. Rather, many were happy that Shadow of the Erdtree was nominated for the award.
Bending the rules two days before announcing nominees was extremely suspicious, and no way was that a coincidence. Was it done mainly to nominate the Elden Ring DLC to perhaps make the completion even fiercer? I can’t say, but it surely wasn’t natural.
Shadow of The Erdtree Being Nominated Isn’t Fair To Other Games
Elden Ring is one of my favorite games of all time. I was actually obsessed with the game at the time, and I even ‘no-hit’ many bosses (even Malenia). So, this is coming from a hardcore Elden Ring fan, and Shadow of The Erdtree being nominated for the Game of the Year category doesn’t seem fair.
I would be lying if I said its nomination didn’t make me happy because it did. Elden Ring DLC is massive in scope, and I had a blast with it, which was perhaps the most fun experience I had this year. However, considering the other games, it isn’t fair to them.
Millions of fans want Black Myth: Wukong to win the award, and rightfully so. I would wish Wukong to win the GOTY award, too, given how great the game was and that it was Game Science’s first project of this scale.
Black Myth: Wukong is a masterpiece in my books, and I consider it 100% to be GOTY material. There are other releases like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Astro Bot, and Metaphor ReFantazio that have a solid chance of winning the award.
However, looking at the facts thoroughly, it is almost clear that the Elden Ring DLC is taking away the award home.
Elden Ring’s Influence Is Massive
Many would know by now that Elden Ring’s influence is actually huge. The game won the Game of the Year award in 2022, and it has a chance to do it again this year. The chances of it winning the award are pretty high as I am almost certain it is going to win.
Like a Dragon: Infinite Health fans were devasted by the nominations as they expected this game to be nominated, and rightfully so. Infinite Wealth is a Japanese masterpiece that doesn’t get enough recognition.
I wouldn’t have minded this game being nominated instead of Elden Ring DLC, but nothing can be done now. What we can do is make up our minds and brace for the announcement that the 2022 GOTY winner will also be a 2024 winner.
There are plenty of fans who are pretty happy that the DLC has been nominated. Well, at least it is better than The Last of Us Part 2 remastered being nominated.
All in all, I hope the best game at The Game Awards wins the most prestigious award. Which game do you want to win the award? Let us know in the comments section below.
