- Sega has found incredible success with Like A Dragon and Persona in recent years.
- It credits day-one multiplatform releases for this success.
- Sega is currently supporting all consoles and PCs and doing its best to bring games to as many fans as possible.
A focus on multiplatform releases and third-party platforms has been gaining popularity across the industry recently. With Xbox confirming a commitment to this approach and PlayStation consistently releasing ports on PC, exclusivity is quickly becoming a relic of the past.
Many major publishers and developers have also advocated for multiplatform releases. Among them, Sega is the latest to reaffirm how effective this approach can be, stating that one major reason for its recent success is the reliance on day-one multiplatform releases.
Why it matters: Other publishers like Square Enix recently committed to a similar approach, highlighting the importance of supporting all platforms from the beginning in today’s gaming landscape.
According to the publisher’s latest Annual Integrated Report for 2024, the Persona and Like A Dragon franchises are doing better than ever. The former has sold north of 23.5 million units, while the latter has achieved more than 27 million sales.
On the other hand, the latest Sonic titles have found plenty of success, with the recently released Sonic X Shadow Generations selling a million units on day one. Sega attributes the success of such titles to multiple factors, but the report states that the multiplatform focus is one of the biggest reasons.
By nurturing and expanding these abundant IPs and deploying them in multiple fields, we are achieving stable profits.
-Sega
Compared to other publishers, Sega currently supports all platforms. The publisher has also tried to bring its games to the Nintendo Switch when possible, expanding its user base across every console and PC.
Reports have suggested that the same approach will carry over to Persona 6.
On the other hand, publishers like Square Enix have suffered due to multiple exclusivity deals. The likes of Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth have been unable to impress with their sales on PS5.
Both publishers stand in stark contrast to each other, signifying Sega’s successful strategy. What are your thoughts on Sega’s statement? Do you agree or disagree? Let’s discuss this in the comments and the official Tech4Gamers Forums.
