All PS5 Units Could Eventually Require Maintenance!

Story Highlight
  • A technician has found an issue with the PS5’s cooling system that could affect all units.
  • The base console’s liquid metal can degrade over time, requiring maintenance.
  • Sony even updated the PS5’s cooling system, as this has been a genuine problem.

Cooling is one of the core components of any computing device. To maintain temperatures, Sony used liquid metal on the PS5, which does improve cooling but also causes a bunch of other problems that can lead to major issues

A new report suggests that the liquid metal used in the PS5 could eventually degrade over time, and the system will require maintenance after some time. It also doesn’t seem like a one-off case, and could affect almost every user.

Why it matters: Because liquid metal is more conductive than the regular thermal paste, if it leaks, it can short-circuit circuit components. Some early PS5 units did report this issue, but this new finding could impact everyone.

PS5 Cooling Issue
All PS5 consoles could eventually be affected by liquid-metal degradation.

Service Technician, Modifykatorcasper, posted on X about the liquid metal issue on the PS5 Slim (CFI-2016). Despite being just 1.5 years old, the paste on the APU has dried out and oxidized, losing its cooling properties.

It was reported that the console’s positioning causes the issue, but the technician says it has nothing to do with it and that the problem lies with the application’s quality and degradation.

PS5 Cooling
Liquid metal is notorious for causing a lot of issues.

This is a genuine issue that can eventually creep towards everyone’s PS5, as liquid metal is indeed very sensitive. The PS5 Pro was updated with a different design to address this issue, but the base models can still be impacted.

So, it’s always a good idea to get your PS5 serviced once in a while. While the problem might not present itself with every console ever, it is always recommended to practise caution to avoid any catastrophe.
