- PlayStation has had a Game of the Year nomination each year at The Game Awards for the past 10 years.
- The likes of Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and Astro Bot have been nominated.
- God of War and The Last of Us Part 2 have also won the title before.
PlayStation has always delivered when it comes to first-party titles. Following a streak of high-quality releases from internal studios during the PS3 era, the gaming giant has delivered non-stop hits nearly every year.
Over the last 10 years, it has launched the likes of Spider-Man 2, God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, and more to much critical acclaim and commercial success. This unprecedented level of quality has also earned PlayStation a spot in the GOTY race each year in the last decade.
Why it matters: The Game Awards are considered a celebration of the industry’s biggest achievements. PlayStation’s presence at the show each year highlights its dominance over the industry.
The nominations for this year’s Game of the Year title include the likes of Black Myth: Wukong and Shadow of the Erdtree. Both titles have already won major awards this year, and seem on track to continue this streak next month.
PlayStation’s Astro Bot has also been nominated, completing the 10th major consecutive nomination for the gaming giant. For context, the following games were in the Game of the Year race since 2015:
- Bloodborne
- Uncharted 4
- Horizon Zero Dawn
- God of War and Marvel’s Spider-Man
- Death Stranding
- Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us Part 2
- Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
- God of War Ragnarok and Horizon Forbidden West
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Astro Bot
As such, Astro Bot completes 10 whole years of PlayStation’s presence in this list. Moreover, the gaming giant saw two nominations in 2018, 2020, and 2022, cementing its legacy of first-party titles.
Perhaps the most impressive part about this list is the fact that God of War and The Last of Us Part 2 won the award in 2018 and 2020, respectively.
It should be noted that all games on the list, except Bloodborne and Death Stranding, come from internal PlayStation teams.
In the former’s case, PlayStation owns the IP and was extensively involved in development, while the latter recently shifted hands to Kojima Productions. Anyhow, both titles can be considered first-party games since they were published by PlayStation.
