Palworld Transition To Live Service Title Will Complicate Things, Says CEO

"Making It A Live Service Game Would Extend Its Lifespan"

Story Highlight
  • Palworld instantly broke many records on Steam at launch.
  • Despite the successful launch, the CEO might be considering transitioning the game to a live service model.
  • While the CEO thinks there are many benefits to transitioning, it will also make things complicated.

Pocketpair CEO was successful in making a Pokemon-like game called Palworld, which sold millions of copies on Steam. However, after the game’s success, how would the studio pursue it in the future?

The CEO discussed this in detail with a magazine, saying that the game’s future has not been decided yet and that it will shift to transition anytime soon.

Why it matters: The CEO is not interested in switching the game to a free-to-play or live-service title.

Palworld Pokemon
Palworld Was A Huge Success

Palworld was released in 2024 and became one of the surprising releases because, as a large-scale game usually does, it attracted the attention of many players.

In an interview with ASCII.jp, Pocketpair CEO Takuro Mizobe described the game’s future plans, saying that things have not been decided yet. The transition to the game as a live service title is complicated because, first of all, millions of players have already bought the game on Steam.

The game was not initially designed with that approach in mind, so there would be many challenges involved in taking it down the live-service path.

The live service transition is certainly beneficial for the game as it increases its overall lifespan and adds big revenue from the skins and battle pass, as seen with other live service titles. However, the game is not made that way for these purposes, so it’s really hard to make that transition.

PUBG Battlegrounds
PUBG Took Several Years To Transition

Furthermore, the CEO exemplified PUBG and Fall Guys’ transition to free-to-play from a paid game; however, that move took several years.

Needless to say, the transition is not going to happen soon, and the game will continue to sustain itself as a paid game on Steam. There are also reports of the game extending to PlayStation. So, the sales will go further, and once again, it will revive following the release of PS5
