A Good Choice!

Review Summary

The ORICO IG740 Pro 2TB SSD is a fast and affordable Gen4 NVMe drive that delivers solid performance in gaming and everyday tasks, even beating some more expensive options like the Corsair MP600 Elite in certain tests. It comes with useful extras in the box like a heatsink, thermal pad, and screwdriver, which adds to its value. While it doesn’t have a DRAM cache and runs a bit hot under heavy use, it still offers great speed, good features, and a fair price—making it a smart pick for users upgrading from older drives.

ORICO is a China-based technology brand that manufactures computer accessories such as storage, memory modules, and other computer and laptop products. This brand is quite popular in Southeast Asia and is known for making high-quality products. We’re looking at one of their NVMe Storage, Orico IG740 PRO 2TB.

There is something slightly different about ORICO; they haven’t slapped the word ‘gaming’ in everything, just like you see with other brands. When you open this specific product page, you will see something like ”Industrial Grade” everywhere on their marketing page. Yes, we have heard you that this storage can be used in Enterprise Data Centers, AI, just like most storage solutions would do; yeah, the marketing could have been balanced here, though. Anyways, we are here to look at the performance of this SSD.

Packaging & Accessories

ORICO IG740 Pro 2TB comes in fancy packaging secured in a plastic container inside; surprisingly, it comes with the heat spreader with the extra thermal pad and the screwdriver and one M.2 screw for installation, and a manual book is also added. It is nice to see they have included all the essentials we usually don’t see much in NVMe SSDs. Kudos to Orico!

The Controller is MAP1602 from Maxio (China-based). It is DRAM-less and can be adapted to all 3D NAND, including 3D MLC/TLC/QLC. This Controller uses Dynamic SLC Caching to Boost Write Performance and uses an HBM (Host Memory Buffer) of 32MB. Four flash chips carry 4Tbit (Terabit), equaling 500GB and squaring it to 2000GB.

Software

The SSD does not have their software, but we have used AIDA64 to further inspect the SSD.

Testing Setup

I used this setup to test the drive:

Testing Scenario

Category Application Scenario
Real-World Test 3DMark Storage Gaming Benchmark Measures gaming performance using traces from real games (loading, saving, installing, recording gameplay).
Real-World Test PCMark 10 Storage ‘Quick’ Benchmark Shorter test with lighter real-world traces, ideal for smaller system drives.
Real-World Test PCMark 10 Storage ‘Full System Drive’ Benchmark Comprehensive test using diverse real-world traces for modern high-speed drives.
Synthetic Test CrystalDiskMark Measures sequential & random read/write speeds (MB/s), 4KiB performance, and latency.
Monitoring Tool HWiNFO Monitors SSD temperatures and other health metrics during testing.
Games Loading Times Cyberpunk 2077, Red Dead Redemption II Game opening time and loading time are tested.

Real World Test Results

Orico demonstrates excellent performance in this benchmark, outperforming Corsair MP600 Elite by a small margin; 3DMark Storage Gaming uses traces from real games, so if you’re a gamer, this benchmark can influence your decision in purchasing your next storage solution.

The quick benchmark from PCMark10 is not intensive and cannot measure the full potential of the storage; this benchmark focuses on light real-world traces, mostly suitable for the small storage solution. However, Orico IG740 Pro is slower than WDSN770 and Corsair MP600 Elite but demonstrates almost double in performance compared with Samsung 970 EVO Gen3 Storage.

Orico IG740 nails in full system drive benchmark. It’s a longer test and more intensive on the storage solutions; here, it’s outperforming Corsair MP600 Elite by a good margin. However, WDSN770 is breaking no sweat despite having lower sequential speeds; Orico provides an amazing performance for the value here.

Synthetic Test Results

For the synthetic tests, we run Crystal Disc Mark to evaluate sequential read and write speeds and Random 4Kib performance. Orico provides a strong read performance of 7,400MB/s and almost 6,400MB/s in write. The write performance is a little slower than Corsair MP600 Elite. In RND, 4K results are slightly faster overall in sequential speeds; this NVMe demonstrates powerful performance.

Gaming Loading Time

Orico demonstrates amazing loading times in Red Dead Redemption II and is identical to other NVMe Storage Solutions in Cyberpunk 2077.

Temperatures

ORICO IG740 Pro 2TB Temperatures
ORICO IG740 Pro 2TB Temperatures

We’re stress-testing our storage solution on the PCMark10 Drive Performance Consistency Test; this test consistently writes a large amount of data on the drive. We’ve run this benchmark for almost 10 minutes. However, three sensors report that the first two are the NAND-flash chips; these are probably hotspot temperatures.

However, we are hitting 85c on peak and 78c on average at the room temperature of 24.6c, higher than the Corsair MP600 Elite Gen4x4 NVMe we reviewed earlier. We are using our motherboard heatsink on the top of the storage solution. This SSD is incredibly fast and also produces so much heat at the same time, however, the temperatures are still in the safe range.

Should You Buy It?

Buy It If

You are upgrading from the older storage: ORICO IG740 Pro 2TB delivers an excellent upgrade over PCIe Gen3x4 SSDs. Sequential Speeds Peaking up to 7400MB/s and 6400MB/s is a massive jump from the traditional 3000MB/s Gen3 SSDs.

You want quicker loading times in games: Corsair MP600 Elite 2TB delivers incredible game loading times, beating Corsair MP600 Elite 2TB Gen4 in Red Dead Redemption II by 10 seconds.

Don’t Buy It If

You want the storage with DRAM Cache: Without the DRAM Cache, SSDs rely on the Nand Flash or HMB (Host Memory Buffer), leading to reduced write performance/operations.

Your motherboard does not support PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe: ORICO IG740 Pro 2TB is the Gen4x4 Fast NVMe Storage Device. Though it can run on PCIe Gen3x4, it can do so at much lower speeds.

Final Thoughts

Orico IG740 ticks all the boxes and demonstrates excellent overall performance in synthetics, gaming, and application workloads. The 2 TB version costs USD 134.99, which is $15 cheaper than the Corsair MP600 Elite 2TB. Interestingly, Orico has added a Heatspreader, Thermal Pad, and Screwdriver inside the box, which makes this SSD a better value than Corsair’s. However, the SSD runs a little bit hot, but nothing serious.
