Nintendo Switch 2 has had a fantastic start to its tenure so far. Despite issues in availability, the console has outsold the original by 77% in the United States while shipping 2.4 million units in the country alone.
With games like Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Star Wars Outlaws performing beautifully on the console, it’s easy to see why the handheld is such a hit. According to Nintendo, it is even outperforming their expectations.
Why it matters: The Nintendo Switch 2’s massive success is a significant win for the industry, as Nintendo’s consoles are a substantial part of the medium’s economic strength.

According to the second quarter financial report, the Nintendo Switch 2 has now sold over 10 million units worldwide. The console had the best Q2 for any Nintendo console in history, surpassing Wii’s record of 2.65 million units sold.
Furthermore, Switch 2 shipped 4.54 million units this quarter, leading to an increase in estimated sales at the end of Fiscal Year 2026. Previously, Nintendo expected it to sell 15 million units, but now that projection has been hiked up to 19 million.
Software also showcased an outstanding performance, with the company shipping 11.95 million units on the Nintendo Switch 2 this quarter.
This was also the best second quarter for the publisher in terms of software sales, bringing the total amount of software sales on the console to 20.62 million. Donkey Kong Bananza shipped a whopping 3.49 million units on the Switch 2, becoming the biggest debut in the series.

On the other hand, Mario Kart World is now approaching 10 million unit sales, with a remarkable attach rate of nearly 92%. In addition, the Americas were the biggest software consumers according to the report, accounting for 39% of the total shipment of games.
With AAA juggernauts like Resident Evil Requiem set to launch on the console soon, Nintendo Switch 2 is only going to improve these numbers.
