NetherRealm Studios has released multiple fighting games based on DC comics. The Injustice franchise from the developer features popular characters like Superman and The Flash.
Over the last decade, the studio has alternated between Mortal Kombat and Injustice games. However, this changes with Mortal Kombat 1, with the developer releasing two consecutive Mortal Kombat games.
While this led to concern about the future of Injustice, Ed Boon has claimed that the doors are not closed for Injustice 3.
Why it matters: The Injustice franchise has received positive reception, in addition to excellent sales. Injustice 2 sold over 1.5 million copies in the first three months, and a new game would likely receive similar success.
Mortal Kombat Director Ed Boon recently sat for an interview with IGN, discussing the future of Injustice. He also elaborated on the team’s decision to create another Mortal Kombat title.
According to Ed Boon, the pandemic and NetherRealm’s decision to upgrade to Unreal Engine 4 led to the team picking Mortal Kombat 1 over a new Injustice game. He stated:
“Eventually we realised, let’s do another Mortal Kombat and hopefully we’ll get back to the Injustice games.”
This means that fans should not lose hope for Injustice 3. The developer has spent several years building that universe, and it would not make much sense to abandon a fan-favorite franchise.
Characters like Batman and Superman will return to the big screen with a brand new DC cinematic universe soon, and this will provide the studio an opportunity to capitalize on their popularity.
Therefore, Injustice 3 could be the next game from the studio.
In the meantime, audiences can get excited about Mortal Kombat 1. The game is releasing on September 19, bringing new mechanics like Kameo characters to mix up the traditional Mortal Kombat gameplay.
