- Microsoft is allegedly developing emulation for ROG Ally handhelds to bring select Xbox 360 and other console games.
- This will allow gamers to directly play select Xbox titles on the handhelds in the near future.
- More major AAA titles like Hogwarts Legacy will also become a part of the Xbox Play Anywhere program soon.
The ROG Ally handhelds sold like hotcakes after pre-orders went live, proving that the demand is there. However, the new lineup has also been criticized for various reasons, including its exorbitant pricing and for not natively playing the entire Xbox library.
Now, the reliable insider Jez Corden reveals that Microsoft is aware of the dilemma and is already allegedly developing a solution. The company is working on official emulation technology for the new lineup that it plans to launch next year.
Why it matters: The Xbox ROG Ally getting emulation would finally resolve one of the biggest criticisms raised by gamers, letting select titles from older consoles run natively on the devices.
While talking on the XboxEra Discord server, Jez Corden explains that Microsoft is working on an emulator that will play Xbox 360 and other console games on the handhelds. However, only a few games would be supported via emulation due to various complications.
For instance, studios would need to greenlight their titles due to licensing. Jez adds that major AAA games like Hogwarts Legacy will soon join Xbox Play Anywhere, making them playable on ASUS portables.
A job listing posted by Xbox’s next-generation vice president, Jason Ronald, earlier this year also massively supports these emulation claims. However, nothing has officially been confirmed by Microsoft so far.
On a side note, Jez Corden mentions that a future ‘Xbox PC’ OEM device is also in development that runs Windows without full backward compatibility. Additionally, a lot more Xbox hardware is allegedly planned for the next few years.
